Who is making and designing all the art?
Our owner is also the artist behind “Little Small & Co.” Samantha designs and builds everything in her studio in Connecticut. The only things she doesn’t make are the bases for her fairy houses and the metal she uses her jewelry.
How long will the artwork last?
Items kept indoors, away from direct sunlight and away from water will last for years and years. Our fairy houses, and fairy doors are designed to live indoors but can be brought outside if you wish. However, the natural elements will change the look and structural integrity of these pieces. Magic Potions and Magic Wands are designed to withstand gentle play but like anything else, they will crack or break when thrown around or dropped. Magic wands are built according to the user’s specifications for durability so if you want a wand you can keep on your person and handle daily, we can accommodate that! As for jewelry, keep your pieces away from water, lotion and perfume to maintain shine and structural integrity.
Which metals do you use for jewelry?
We used 14kt filled French hooks for our earrings, nick free clasps for necklaces and nickel free brass for our clip earrings and ear cuffs.
Are the materials really sourced by the artist?
yes! Samantha regularly travels to beaches and forests all over new England to carefully and scarcely collect rocks, branches, bark and shells. she never takes anything that is still “living” and by this we mean, she never rips bark or moss from trees and rocks and she doesn’t evict animals like snails from their homes. Everything is gathered sparingly and cleaned carefully before use.
what’s your return policy?
All sales are final. no refunds or exchanges. if artwork made by little small & co. is damaged, we are happy to provide repairs.
how can everything be original?
if we protect it, nature is abundant! We have a specific style of composition for our artwork across all categories but the beauty of working with natural materials is that no two are the same. you may have a fairy house with the same materials and base as another collector, but your houses will not look the same. All of our Fairy Houses, Picture Frames, Fairy Doors and Magic Wands come with a certificate of authenticity that is signed and dated by the artist and also come with either a little small & co. metal tag or they’re stamped and signed on the back/bottom.
why are your prices so low for your artwork and for your events?
there is no use in beating around the bush…the majority of families in the us are struggling to make ends meet and almost everyone is living hand to mouth. Samantha feels strongly that art should be accessible to everyone so when pricing her artworks, she is only charging for time, not materials. she would rather absorb the cost of logistics (gas, travel…), bases, metals and glue and get her artwork to as many people as possible than pass that cost onto her collectors.
Samantha and her family are solidly working-class and as much as they would love to win the lottery as much as the next person, at the end of the day they don’t feel right about price gauging and up charging just to relieve their own purse strings. NO, this isn’t typical practice, and it means we lose money for a while upfront until things really take off. but while we have our good health and access to nutritious food with roofs over our heads, our priority is to help everyone celebrate art and nature, on us.
Why did you decide to start an events Division, specifically for children’s birthday parties? what does that have to do with art?
Samantha began her career as an early childhood educator and professional, full-time nanny so this was a natural extension. our birthday parties are centered around a craft project where kids will use natural materials to create keepsakes. it’s little small & co. with little small people, encouraging empathy for our ecosystems, developing dexterity, building confidence and inspiring through creative thinking.
how long do your artworks take to make?
Hours, days and weeks. Fairy houses take around 8 hours to build, frames take two hours and so on. We try to keep a “ready to ship” stock but often times this isn’t possible, so all artwork is made to order with about a three-week turnaround time.
where can we see your artwork in person?
As of December 2024, you can see Samantha’s Picture frames and jewelry at Spectrum Art Gallery. Her stationery line and keepsake boxes along with a limited collection of fairy houses, magic wands and potions are available at The Florence Griswold Museum. And a limited amount of her entire collection is available at The Village Herbery.
why is your company called “little small”?
little works of art with small carbon footprints. She added on the &co. because she always knew we wanted to expand and as of September 2024, we have! We now have “Little Garden Gatherings” for parties, workshops and presentations and “Once in a Little Blue Moon’ for gift collections including our artwork and other artists based in New England who create art sustainably. Samantha has always been extremely ambitious so who knows…we may expand again!
